It’s that time of year when next year’s growth starts looking very achievable in a spreadsheet. You’ve worked through the assumptions and challenged the numbers. Now comes the part that’s harder to put into a budget: helping your team deliver it while running the business you already have.

That’s why I think there’s a question worth spending more time on before the numbers are finalized:

*What will need to happen on an ordinary Tuesday to make this growth possible?*

Your team can know the target and care about reaching it without being clear about what needs to change in their work. As leaders, we can underestimate how much help people need making that connection, especially when we’ve been doing it ourselves for years.

### What does “grow the account” mean to the person doing the work?

Consider a familiar goal: expanding existing accounts. It makes sense to grow relationships where you’ve already earned trust, and you may see opportunities your team hasn’t pursued.

Your account manager, meanwhile, feels good about the relationship. The client is happy, they speak regularly, and service is going well. From their perspective, they’re doing what you’ve asked. From yours, there’s business being left on the table.

That’s a frustrating conversation for both people, particularly when it keeps coming up in account reviews.

[Gallup’s research](https://www.gallup.com/workplace/716117/employee-engagement-below-30-first-time-years.aspx), published in October 2026, found that

> only 46% of U.S. employees strongly agreed they knew what was expected of them at work.

That finding covers employees broadly, but it gives leaders something to think about. We can believe we’ve been clear because we’ve talked about a goal often. The person responsible for delivering it may still be figuring out what we mean.

“Grow the account” becomes more useful when you work through what’s getting in the way. Your account manager may have a strong day-to-day contact but feel uncomfortable asking for an introduction to someone with broader responsibility. They may also need help understanding what they would discuss once they got the meeting.

Before settling on a solution, ask what’s making that conversation difficult. Someone who needs help preparing for the meeting will need different coaching from someone who knows how to approach it but keeps putting it off. Now you have something you can work on together.

### Give people a chance to get better before expecting more

It’s tempting to leave that account review with an agreement to “get in front of more decision-makers.” Everyone has somewhere else to be, and it sounds like a reasonable next step.

But the hesitation that kept your account manager from having that conversation is probably still there. A few minutes practicing how to ask for the introduction could make the commitment much more realistic.

This is the kind of development that needs a place in a growth plan**.** <https://more.butlerstreet.com/sales-mastery>[Sales Mastery](https://more.butlerstreet.com/sales-mastery) helps people build a consistent approach to sales conversations, including understanding the client’s operating reality and asking questions that uncover a meaningful business need. Those skills give a seller more confidence about what to do with the opportunity they’ve worked to create.

Finding time to reinforce them is a challenge Butler Street understands. Our facilitators have held leadership and operating roles themselves, including responsibility for results while developing the people expected to deliver them. The demands on a manager’s calendar are real.

Sales Coach AI helps make practice available between coaching conversations. Someone preparing for that first executive-level meeting can rehearse it and get feedback before walking into the client’s office. The manager can then focus their time on where that person still needs help.

There’s still a commitment for the salesperson to own and a follow-up for the manager to keep. Agreeing on what they’ll do and when, then coming back to discuss how it went, puts personal accountability into practice. Repeating that follow-through helps the new behavior become a habit.

### Keep the conversation going after planning season

As the year gets underway, it’s easy for reviews to return to the numbers. You need to know where revenue stands, and there are always questions about what will close before the end of the quarter.

Make some room to revisit the work you agreed would help produce that revenue. Ask about the client conversation your account manager was preparing for. What did they learn that changes their understanding of the opportunity? Their answer gives you a much better starting point for coaching than asking again when the account will grow.

Before you sign off on the 2027 plan, picture that ordinary Tuesday. Think about whether your people will be prepared for the conversations your growth depends on, and how you’ll help them keep improving their skills when the daily whirlwind of activities don’t stop.

Through Diagnose. Develop. Perfect.®, Butler Street helps leaders understand what’s holding performance back and develop the capabilities their teams need, with ongoing reinforcement to help improvement stick. Whether you’re planning your annual kickoff or considering Sales Mastery with Sales Coach AI, we can help you determine where to focus.
