No Change, No Change

5 Actionable Shifts to Elevate Sales, Recruiting & Leadership

My main objective when I am facilitating training is to try to convince my training participants to make changes in how they sell, recruit, and lead. This is also the most challenging part of my role.

At Butler Street, we like to say “No change. No change.” Put differently - If you are unwilling to change how you sell, recruit or lead, do not expect any changes in your results or outcomes.

Now, I wish I could say that every trainee who went through my training sessions was an absolute All-star but that is not how the world works.

So, what do All-stars look like?

Here are my observations:

All-stars are highly engaged during my sessions. They are always on camera and chime in with their thoughts on the concepts being covered even if they are uncomfortable. They embrace new and different techniques and will often share their successes or successful failures in implementing those techniques. They role practice.

They are positive and have a growth mindset. They do not fear failure but rather embrace it, adjust and grow as a result. I also believe they are curious and never satisfied with their current approaches or results.

If you are an All-star, keep doing what you are doing but if you are not, follow these steps.

  1. Determine what causes you to have a negative attitude because if you are not an All-star, there is a good chance your attitude could use positivity. Triggers such as lack of sleep, negative people in your life, lack of exercise, poor diet or weak time management are within your control. Find ways to overcome your triggers.

  2. Abandon your late adopter mentality. Reluctant to try something new? Well, jump in with both feet, take baby steps and start doing that new thing. AI is a great example here.

  3. Fail Forward. The real failure in life is not doing something. If you think you might fail, good!! Do that thing and if you do fail, learn from it and grow.

  4. Remove the words “no” and “yes, but” from your vocabulary. Replace those words with “yes, and.” Here are some examples:

    1. The statement “No I do not want to go to that networking event” becomes yes, I get to go to that networking event and I will ask open-ended, follow-up questions during conversations with others.

    2. The statement “yes, I know I need to call more candidates, but I am so busy” becomes “yes, I get to call more candidates and achieve this with dedicated call blocks.”

  5. Do more activity and try new approaches. Great salespeople, recruiters and leaders are always on the hunt for fresh new messaging and techniques.

That’s good for now. I am not going to overload you with a long list of things you should do.  Five is plenty. But just understand that all five of these steps, require a commitment to change.

Remember this statement.

The person who thinks they can and the person who thinks they can’t are both right.

Change is good. Change ensures you do not become irrelevant. So go change!
